Case Closed

A spirit teacher shares His understanding of timeless wisdom
contained within the I Ching Hexagram 61 – Settled.

Water is over Fire.

It’s curious to me that Water is Yang and Fire is Yin.

Why?

I would consider Fire to be more powerful than Water.

How so?

Fire can rage out of control.

Water seems to be able to control Fire more easily
than can Fire control Water.

Fire can heat Water.

Not without human help to control it.

I’ve distracted you from the reading.

No. You’ve distracted yourself, alone.

So, Water over Fire settles or calms Fire?

Settled refers to closed, as in, this issue has been …

What issue?

Whatever issue.

Our discussion?

Yes.

We Choose to Share, or Do We?

Spirit shares His understanding of the timeless wisdom
expressed within the I Ching Hexagram 18 – Degeneration.

Degeneration follows Following (17) and develops into
Overseeing (19).

Mountain (yang) is over Wind (yin).

Isn’t that curious?

That yang is above yin? or that Wind is below Mountain?

Neither.

Then, what is curious.

The construction of the hexagram.

What about the construction of the hexagram?

Mountain contains one yang holding down two yin
while Wind contains one yin holding up two yang.

It doesn’t work that way.

Then, how does it work?

Life works at its finest when we learn to care for
others; even those who seem to oppress us.

Where does Degeneration fit into this concept
of life.

The second line is yang and the fifth line is yin.
The fifth line is the line of leadership and having
a complement on the second line provides for a sharing
of this position of power.

But, if degeneration is the condition that they share …

How could it be otherwise?

I would like to think that any degenerating situation is
a result of masculine abuse of power.

That would be to deny the existence of feminine energy.

How?

How what?

How does masculine responsibility for whatever condition
or situation deny feminine energy?

Abdication or denial of responsibility is, more or less,
acceptance of whatever situation or condition results
from such behaviour.

Are you trying to tell me that …

I’m telling you that dynamic interaction requires
inequality; transient or otherwise, of each and all
of the individual energies in the choices we make.

We?

We share the choice.

And the outcome?

Yes.

Oppression Incites Reaction

A spirit teacher shares His understanding
of the timeless wisdom expressed within
the symbolic structure of I Ching.

Life situations and experiences necessarily
develop from previous conditions and lead
to future possibilities. Choices were made,
are made, and will be made, to integrate
human activities within an ever-expanding
universe.

The I Ching Hexagram 49 – Revolution
is expressed with the trigram named Lake
above the trigram named Fire.

Oppressed people may appear as passive
as still water, while within them burns
a fire of indignation or, worse, hatred
toward those they feel responsible for
the injustices inflicted upon them.

It sounds like a dangerous situation.

It is a dangerous situation.

Why do people endure injustice until
it reaches such an explosive situation?

Why do people inflict injustice until
it reaches such an explosive situation?

Perhaps they feel helpless to change
the situation.

Alone or together?

Would it make a difference?

Yes and no.

Please explain.

We are each alone only as long as we each
believe we are each alone.

How would awareness of group oppression
change the situation?

Nothing can change without such awareness.

Then, awareness of togetherness unites us?

Yes.

But, some might be more aware than are others.

Why?

Their focus is only on self?

Yes.

How can they become united?

A leader.

How would they choose a leader?

They usually do not.

Then, how is a leader chosen?

The leader of a revolution often choose himself,
or is chosen by a small group.

How can such a leader, or small group, know
the wishes of those whom they would lead?

They tell the masses what is best for them.

And the masses believe them?

They often seem to be willing to believe.

Then, after the battle is won, if it is,
the masses could sooner or later be oppressed
by a new leader or his small group?

His?

Isn’t war a male thing?

Yes.

Life Is What It Is

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

Today’s experience along the way is expressed by
Hexagram 50 – The Cauldron. Fire is above Wind.

Wind would certainly agitate Fire. But, why is
the situation referred to as a cauldron?

The sixth or top line is yang, and is as a lid,
while the first, or bottom line is yin, and is
as a pair of legs that form the base of the body
of the pot.

So yang keeps a lid on yin?

Yes. Intellect must rule over emotion.

Another Universal Law?

Yes.

But, it doesn’t make sense.

In what way?

How could yang do anything without yin?

It cannot.

Then, why must intellect rule emotion?

Intellect rules emotion only in the sense
that …

It has more sense?

That, too.

So, if intellect rules and yet can do nothing
of value …

It can do nothing, period, without yin;
of value or otherwise.

So, we need both intellect and emotion?

Yes.

How do they relate to each other?

As husband and wife.

Or as man and woman?

That isn’t the same.

In what way is it not, if men are superior?

Men are not superior.

Then, please explain.

Husband and wife is a relationship between
two people.

Go on.

Are you ready?

I think so.

Then, here it is. Every team or group requires
a leader to direct it, if that team, group, society,
or married couple share a common goal. We each
contribute what we are best able to contribute,
depending upon our natural attributes, knowledge,
skills, and potentials.

And women are designed to keep the home fires burning?

Yes.

A lot of women, myself included, would call you
a male chauvinist.

Names do not change reality. Life is what it is.

Until it changes?

It never changes from being Life.
