It’s curious to me that Water is Yang and Fire is Yin.

Why?

I would consider Fire to be more powerful than Water.

How so?

How Many Times?

Spirit shares His understanding of the life situation expressed by I Ching Hexagram 14 – Great Possession. Fire is over Heaven. Both are yang.  Great Possession follows Association with Others (13) and leads to Humility (15).

“Fire, in this instance, expresses emotion out of control, or with great potential
to move in that direction. Heaven represents self-controlled
power and stability.”

“We’re into Yin and Yang again?”

“We can never leave the concepts of extremes of emotion
and control.”

“Why?”

“These are as boundaries within which we live.”

“Are they the same for everyone?”

“Yes and no.”

“Why yes?”

“We each choose the boundaries of our comfort or
safety zone, within which we live our life
our way.”

“And no?”

“Some dare to accept that self-imposed boundaries
can be expanded, without necessarily leaving
the situation or relationship the boundaries
enclose.”

“Why not just leave and start again?”

Situations beyond our control

Spirit shares His understanting of Hexagram 16 . Tunder is over Earth; yin over yin.

“Delight means Pleasure. Delight/Pleasure follows Respectful (15) and leads to Following (17). We are attracted to like-minded people. If we can live and work together with an attitude of mutual respect then the work itself becomes a pleasure.”

“That sounds like an ideal situation, but many of us associate and work with people who seem determined not to develop an attitude of respect; mutual or otherwise.”

“Then why are we there?”

“Perhaps we feel trapped within conditions beyond our control, and must choose a situation that is the lesser of two or more evils.”

“Then, take control of the situation.”

“That’s easier said than done.”

“Yes.”

Free will and community

Today’s I Ching is 60 – Discipline.

Water over Lake.
Discipline follows Dispersal in a continuous order of events.

Spirit explains: When a river flows into a lake the water overflows onto surrounding land, unless it is restricted
from doing so.

Dispersal suggests an unorganized scattering, such as seeds
or dry leaves by a wind.

There is no free will choice, no sense of freedom involved
when we have no self-control concerning where we are going
with our life.

Self-discipline determines what we will do with our potential; how it will be directed. Without self-control we risk being controlled by others.

How to have it both ways? I need to be free and still be a contributing member of a community. I need to think for myself and still learn from You and others.

Yes, we need both.

Then how do we work both sides of the street?

We don’t.

Then what?

We compromise; we find an acceptable middle ground between the extremes of individualism and group control. But, we must always be aware of the price we choose to pay, or we risk losing choosing.

Spirit’s I Ching 50 – The Cauldron

Fire over wind.

The Cauldron follows Revolution.

 

Spirit explains:

 

A cauldron is a heavy cooking pot, placed over fire, to heat and

Tenderize its contents.

 

A revolution is also as a heavy cooking pot, fired with ideals and intent

To change social rules and make them more satisfying to more people.

 

However, in both cases, there is always a danger of the fire getting

Out of control and destroying what it was intended to improve.

 

But, we need fire.

 

Yes, but we also need to keep it under control.

 

How?

 

A wise cook knows how much heat to apply and when.

 

And a wise leader?

Dispersal follows Pleasing.

 

Spirit explains:

 

We cannot always choose where to be born, where to live, or

Where to die. There are forces beyond our personal control

That influence our lives.

 

We can call these forces by many names; Fate, Destiny, Karma,

Chance, Chaos, the Hand of God, whatever, and we may not be

Pleased by the power they have over us.

 

Dispersal suggests a disorganized scattering, as seeds by

Wind. We may not have chosen to be where we are, now,

In our life’s journey, but we are responsible for how we live,

Is there any good news?

Today’s I Ching – 60 – Discipline

Water above, Lake below.

Discipline follows Dispersal.

 

Spirit explains:

 

Water above a lake suggests flooding. The lake can only hold

as much as it can hold before dispersing the excess water.

Societies have learned from nature and build barriers to

Protect themselves from flooding.

 

Rules of Law serve the same purpose as flood control.

It’s called crowd control. However, for a society to survive

And thrive, individuals must learn to control their own

Desire for excess. We each need to learn how to limit

Ourselves.
