An Ounce of Prevention

A spirit teacher shares His understanding
of I Ching 58 – Pleasing.

Lake is over Lake.

If water is emotional …

And it is.

Then, we’ve lost perspective.

Yes.

Pleasing follows Wind and moves toward
Dispersal.

Wind could blow and disperse overflowing
lake water.

What kind of wind would disperse excess
emotion?

The winds of change?

Yes.

Is there something that can be learned
from this situation?

There is always something that can be learned
from any situation.

But, dispersal of flood waters or excess
emotions can be destructive to surrounding
areas.

Yes.

What can we do to protect ourselves and
those we love, and what we now possess.

Before or after?

Prevention is the answer?

Yes.

And, if it’s too late?

Then we suffer the consequences of failure
to recognize and respond to signs of potential
danger and act to prevent tragedies that may
have been prevented.

An ounce of prevention?

Yes.

Does di

Life Is What It Is

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

Today’s experience along the way is expressed by
Hexagram 50 – The Cauldron. Fire is above Wind.

Wind would certainly agitate Fire. But, why is
the situation referred to as a cauldron?

The sixth or top line is yang, and is as a lid,
while the first, or bottom line is yin, and is
as a pair of legs that form the base of the body
of the pot.

So yang keeps a lid on yin?

Yes. Intellect must rule over emotion.

Another Universal Law?

Yes.

But, it doesn’t make sense.

In what way?

How could yang do anything without yin?

It cannot.

Then, why must intellect rule emotion?

Intellect rules emotion only in the sense
that …

It has more sense?

That, too.

So, if intellect rules and yet can do nothing
of value …

It can do nothing, period, without yin;
of value or otherwise.

So, we need both intellect and emotion?

Yes.

How do they relate to each other?

As husband and wife.

Or as man and woman?

That isn’t the same.

In what way is it not, if men are superior?

Men are not superior.

Then, please explain.

Husband and wife is a relationship between
two people.

Go on.

Are you ready?

I think so.

Then, here it is. Every team or group requires
a leader to direct it, if that team, group, society,
or married couple share a common goal. We each
contribute what we are best able to contribute,
depending upon our natural attributes, knowledge,
skills, and potentials.

And women are designed to keep the home fires burning?

Yes.

A lot of women, myself included, would call you
a male chauvinist.

Names do not change reality. Life is what it is.

Until it changes?

It never changes from being Life.

A Response-Free Emotion

Spirit explains I Ching 60 – Discipline.

Water is above Lake, and lakes have limits
to how much water they can hold.

To add more water, as in times of flooding,
results in loss of discipline.

Discipline implies limits; self-imposed or
socially determined.

Yang is above Yin in this instance, which
describes thought over emotion.

Then, rational thought should determine
the limits of acceptable emotion?

Yes.

How is that possible?

Self-control.

Self-imposed limits to emotional experience
or to emotional expression?

Yes.

What does that mean?

The role of self-discipline along our path
to enlightenment honours genuine emotions.

How can I know if my emotions are genuine?

Are they self-determined?

They are usually responses to outside
influences.

Then, you have answered your own question.

What emotion can be free from outside
influences.

Unconditional love.

How Many Times?

Spirit shares His understanding of the life situation expressed by I Ching Hexagram 14 – Great Possession. Fire is over Heaven. Both are yang.  Great Possession follows Association with Others (13) and leads to Humility (15).

“Fire, in this instance, expresses emotion out of control, or with great potential
to move in that direction. Heaven represents self-controlled
power and stability.”

“We’re into Yin and Yang again?”

“We can never leave the concepts of extremes of emotion
and control.”

“Why?”

“These are as boundaries within which we live.”

“Are they the same for everyone?”

“Yes and no.”

“Why yes?”

“We each choose the boundaries of our comfort or
safety zone, within which we live our life
our way.”

“And no?”

“Some dare to accept that self-imposed boundaries
can be expanded, without necessarily leaving
the situation or relationship the boundaries
enclose.”

“Why not just leave and start again?”

“How many times?”

Spirit’s I Ching 6 – Contention

Spirit explains:

Contention follows Waiting in the order of the hexagrams.

Creative energy is above. Unstable emotion is below.

Contention expresses dissatisfaction with waiting. Change is

Wanted now, and unstable emotion could create unstable action.

Without change there is danger of stagnation.

What change? What action? By whom?, and for what, or whom?

By each of us, for all concerned, to be whom we are and not

Pretend to be otherwise.

What is it all about?

Living a good life.

I don’t understand.

Yes.

I Ching 14 – Great Possession

Today’s I Ching reading by Spirit

Water over Heaven (water refers to emotion, while heaven

suggests creative energy).

Great Possession follows Association with Others.

Spirit explains:

Community is an integral part of Life’s purpose.. The need or

Desire to associate connects us to others. This serves basic

Survival needs, as well as providing emotional satisfaction.

Association with others is a great possession or it isn’t,

Depending upon whom we choose to associate with.

How can we know with whom to associate?

For what purpose?

A sense of community.

What kind of community?

A community of like-minded souls.

In the same way we learn anything, through experience.

That could take a lot of time and pain.

Yes. Some learn quicker than do others.

I Ching 60 – Discipline

Today’s I Ching reading by Spirit

Water above Lake

Discipline follows Dispersal.

Spirit explains:

Dispersal describes scattering, a disorganized

Movement of whatever.

Water over Lake strongly suggests flooding,

A disorganized movement of water, or emotion.

Where is discipline?

Obviously, it is missing.

Is that a personal comment?

Yes.
