An Ounce of Prevention

A spirit teacher shares His understanding
of I Ching 58 – Pleasing.

Lake is over Lake.

If water is emotional …

And it is.

Then, we’ve lost perspective.

Yes.

Pleasing follows Wind and moves toward
Dispersal.

Wind could blow and disperse overflowing
lake water.

What kind of wind would disperse excess
emotion?

The winds of change?

Yes.

Is there something that can be learned
from this situation?

There is always something that can be learned
from any situation.

But, dispersal of flood waters or excess
emotions can be destructive to surrounding
areas.

Yes.

What can we do to protect ourselves and
those we love, and what we now possess.

Before or after?

Prevention is the answer?

Yes.

And, if it’s too late?

Then we suffer the consequences of failure
to recognize and respond to signs of potential
danger and act to prevent tragedies that may
have been prevented.

An ounce of prevention?

Yes.

Truth is Appropriate in Any and All Instances

Spirit explains I Ching 58 – Pleasing:

As the text expresses, pleasing is beneficial
if correct.

How can we ever know ahead of time how correct
our pleasing is?

Your purpose in trying to please is a clue.

I want everyone to be happy.

Why?

Why would I not want everyone to be happy?

Even if they have caused you to feel
unhappy?

Then, pleasing them, or attempting to,
would seem to reward them for their
unpleasing behaviour?

Exactly.

Then, please explain the purpose of
pleasing.

Pleasing should have no purpose.

Then, why do I seem to need to please.

Whom do you seem to need to please?

You, among others.

How have I, among others, rewarded
your attempts to please?

Negatively, it seems.

Why do you suppose that is, or seems
to be?

I don’t know.

Perhaps you know more than you pretend
to know.

What does that mean?

You and many others have been socially
conditioned to fear displeasing some
others, and so you have developed
a pattern of pretending to attempt
to please.

Why?

As a defensive strategy, to attempt
to reduce or escape confrontation.

Then, you approve?

No.

Why?

Confrontation is necessary and
an honest expression of one’s truth.

Truth is a powerful word.

Yes.

How is it appropriate in this instance?

Truth is appropriate in any instance.
Whether we choose to express it or not,
we should always be aware of it.

Is that possible?

Yes.

Spirit’s I Ching 59 – Dispersal

Dispersal follows Pleasing.

Spirit explains:

We cannot always choose where to be born, where to live, or

Where to die. There are forces beyond our personal control

That influence our lives.

We can call these forces by many names; Fate, Destiny, Karma,

Chance, Chaos, the Hand of God, whatever, and we may not be

Pleased by the power they have over us.

Dispersal suggests a disorganized scattering, as seeds by

Wind. We may not have chosen to be where we are, now,

In our life’s journey, but we are responsible for how we live,

Wherever we are.

Is there any good news?

Yes. We choose how we live the life we have, here and now.

I Ching 59 – Dispersal

Today’s I Ching – 59 – Dispersal

Wind above. Water below.

Dispersal follows Pleasing.

Spirit explains:

Pleasing others serves our own interests and can be intentional,

As a means to an end. Not all smiles are equal. Some are

Sincere while others are not.

Dispersal suggests scattering.

The message?

Do not scatter your thoughts, feelings, or energy.

These are, or can be, as precious gems.

Direct them with intention and wisdom.

To what?

To do good.

I Ching 58 – Pleasing

Today’s I Ching – 58 – Pleasing

Lake above. Lake below.

Pleasing follows Wind.

Spirit explains:

Wind is moving energy and all energy moves.

How it moves affects our relationship to it.

A gentle breeze may be pleasing to the senses,

While a strong wind almost invites resistance.

The message?

Be prepared.

How?

Awareness of change as it happens.
