Ever-Present Dangers

Spirit shares His understanding of I Ching.

Hexagram 29 – Double Pitfall – presents with
two Water trigrams stacked, one on the other.
This symbolic representation of flooding
warns us of a hidden and unexpected danger;
a trap or ambush.

As in the deck being stacked against me
in a game of cards?

Something like that.

How could I ever know in advance?

It would be too late to know if you did not
know then.

How to develop the skill to avoid walking
into a trap?

It doesn’t require a specialized skill.

What does it require?

It requires right, or appropriate, thinking
and action.

That advice sounds like the eight-fold path.

It is the eight-fold path.

Including right or appropriate livelihood?

Yes.

To avoid associating with those who might
be tempted to take advantage of my simplicity?

Yes.

That might require me to become less simple.

Yes.

Reduction without sacrificing

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom. “The focus of today’s lesson is on Hexagram 41 – Reduction – Mountain is over Lake.”

“How is that possible?”

“Mountains rise up out of water or earth.
They do things like that. Also, mountains are by nature, above
their surroundings, except for
mountains higher than themselves.

Reduction is the process of making
something less. It takes a superior
person to reduce whatever is under
her or his control.”

“Intentional downsizing?”

“Yes. Following a path of simplicity
does not require sacrificing personal
quality of life.”

Never Downsize Personal Values

Today’s I Ching reading by Spirit

I Ching 23 – Downsizing.

Mountain over Earth

Downsizing follows Adornment in the order of the Hexagrams.

Spirit explains:

Simplicity may mean different things to different people, but

The concept of downsizing is generally understood.

Downsizing involves reducing whatever we have accumulated

That no longer seems to contribute to the quality of our life

As we now wish to live it.

Downsizing should never involve a reduction of personal values.

Perhaps it could involve selecting which of our collected treasures

We value more than some others.

Yes. What once was or may have seemed important may now

Seem less so.

What about people?

What about them?

May we also need to consider whom to stay close to and whom

To release?

Release? Are you holding on?

Perhaps.

Yes.

I Ching 42 – Increase

Today’s I Ching – 42 – Increase

Wind above (first daughter)

Thunder below (first son)

To me it looks like a sibling war.

Increase follows Reduction in the order of the Hexagrams.

Spirit explains:

Oh, oh. Spirit seems aware of my thoughts. What thoughts? The cynical notion, idea that, perhaps, if   what you have has been reduced enough then the only way to go is up. Spirit seems to think that frugality and simplicity are sacred ways of living, even in the physical world. I disagree.

Now, to the reading.

Spirit is not impressed with my, perhaps, less than respectful observation, and tells me that there will be no reading.

A power trip?

Yes.
