The Horizon as a Well of Mind

A spirit teacher shares His understanding of
Hexagram 48 – The Well, from the ancient source
of wisdom that is I Ching.

Wrapping timeless wisdom in simplicity and
mystery, He tells me, helped to ensure
the survival of both the teachings and
the teachers, or at least some of them,
in a world of shifting degrees of hostility
to messages of love and integrity.

The series of sixty-four I Ching hexagrams
expresses the natural and endless
development of situations and experiences
that we each must face and pass beyond
throughout, as well as before and after,
our journey of a human lifetime,

Do they express the principle of cause
and effect?

The necessary sequence of cause and effect
is much more than a principle. It is
a Universal Law.

Is it a predetermined law?

In what way?

In that a seer would know.

Know what?

The future.

Everyone knows the future.

Perhaps to some extent …

To what extent?

We can’t see beyond the horizon.

Why not?

How would it be possible?

It isn’t possible. There is nothing
to see beyond an endless horizon.

How does this relate to a well?

The water in a well never contains
more or less than it is capable of
containing, regardless of how much
is added or withdrawn.

How can a well’s capacity compare
with the horizon?

The horizon or an horizon?

Are wells as the horizon?

No.

Then, what?

Horizons are as wells.

Horizons?

Yes. The horizon of your mind,
as well as that of others, has
an endless potential to expand.

Or to shrink?

Yes.

What determines it’s fate?

Not its destiny?

No. I accept your teaching of endless
potential as my destiny.

Not yours alone. We each and everyone
share the same destiny; each in her
or his own time and way.

Diversity Beyond Unity is Powerless

A Spirit Teacher shares His understanding of
I Ching Hexagram 2 – The Receptive.

There is no Yang in The Receptive. It is Yin
All the way from bottom to top.

This contrasts with Hexagram 1 – The Creative,
Which is Yang all the way.

The Creative represents Heaven and
The Receptive represents Earth.

Each serves its own unique function, and yet,
each requires the other.

Power and flexibility working together?

Power and flexibility require each other.
Neither can achieve much without the other.

Then, cooperation is desirable?

Cooperation is a prerequisite to achieving
Anything worth achieving.

What Universal Law would express this idea?

It is more than an idea; it is reality.

Then, what Universal Law would express or
Explain this reality.

Realities do not require explanation They are.

Is this reality expressed with a Universal Law?

Yes.

Which Law?

The Law of One.

The Law of One?

Yes.

Please explain.

There is no unity within diversity.

But there is or can be diversity within unity?

Yes.

Life Is What It Is

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

Today’s experience along the way is expressed by
Hexagram 50 – The Cauldron. Fire is above Wind.

Wind would certainly agitate Fire. But, why is
the situation referred to as a cauldron?

The sixth or top line is yang, and is as a lid,
while the first, or bottom line is yin, and is
as a pair of legs that form the base of the body
of the pot.

So yang keeps a lid on yin?

Yes. Intellect must rule over emotion.

Another Universal Law?

Yes.

But, it doesn’t make sense.

In what way?

How could yang do anything without yin?

It cannot.

Then, why must intellect rule emotion?

Intellect rules emotion only in the sense
that …

It has more sense?

That, too.

So, if intellect rules and yet can do nothing
of value …

It can do nothing, period, without yin;
of value or otherwise.

So, we need both intellect and emotion?

Yes.

How do they relate to each other?

As husband and wife.

Or as man and woman?

That isn’t the same.

In what way is it not, if men are superior?

Men are not superior.

Then, please explain.

Husband and wife is a relationship between
two people.

Go on.

Are you ready?

I think so.

Then, here it is. Every team or group requires
a leader to direct it, if that team, group, society,
or married couple share a common goal. We each
contribute what we are best able to contribute,
depending upon our natural attributes, knowledge,
skills, and potentials.

And women are designed to keep the home fires burning?

Yes.

A lot of women, myself included, would call you
a male chauvinist.

Names do not change reality. Life is what it is.

Until it changes?

It never changes from being Life.

There is a Place For Everyone in an Ideal Community

Spirit shares I Ching Wisdom.

Today’s I Ching situation is 10 – Treading.

Treading follows Small Development and
Leads to Tranquility.

Small Development refers to building
community with others.

This is not possible without each member
understanding and accepting certain rules
of relating to others within the community.

We share responsibilities and work
according to our individual nature and
abilities, and yet everyone requires
a sense of dignity and self respect,
knowing she or he is valued for whom
they are and for their contribution
to the harmony and productivity of
the group.

Treading is the outcome of resisting
the temptation to focus on doing
our own thing, but choosing to serve
our unique role within the community.

How could one relate to oneself in such
a community?

In what way?

Surely we each need to develop our own
ideas and create our own vision
of what and who we want to become.

It would require an awareness of how
those personal desires fit into and
serve the community, and how well
one’s energy resonates with the role
chosen by or for us. The role chooses
us as much as we choose the role.

But, what if I am well suited to
the role that somehow chose me,
and yet I prefer another?

Someone else may be doing what you
would prefer to do, so your service
in that role is not needed, whereas …

Duty?

Yes, but you could play the other role
in your spare time, as a hobby.

But, if I have a passion for
a certain role …

Then, perhaps Universal Laws would
consider that role for you,
at another time.

What Universal Law?

The Law of Attraction.

I thought that law attracted people

It does.

I mean specific people to specific
people.

It does that, too.

Then, where and how does it attract
me to a specific role within
a specific community?

You would be attracted to a community
in which you felt comfortable, or
tranquil, within.

And then I would seek to find how
I might contribute to that community?

Yes. If you are of no use to them,
then how could you feel valued?

What if I have no special skill
but I require assistance from
that community, for whatever reason?

Then your personal needs would provide
other members of the community with
an opportunity to express sharing and
caring for those who are unable or
less able to care for themselves, and
sharing and caring are forms of
applied love.

So, there is a place for everyone
in an ideal community?

Yes.

Potential Resources are not Reserves

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

Today’s I Ching situation is 42 – Increase.
It follows Reduction and leads to Removal.

Wind is over Thunder.
They each influence the other.

Increase following reduction suggests
replenishment of reduced reserves or
resources.

How do they differ?

Reserves and resources?

Yes.

We may still have some reserves on hand,
while resources may refer to potential
sources of supply.

Yes.

What does that mean?

We can only increase whatever we have
the potential to increase.

How does that lead to removal?

Through the Universal Law of Cause
and Effect.

Please explain.

Wisdom suggests that we carefully
consider the potential consequences
of depending upon a potential supply
of whatever from a potential source

A bird in the bush is not in the hand?

Yes.

Then, what is the message for me?

Who is your teacher?

You are.

Am I a potential source of learning
or a secure source?

Secure?

Secure.

You are my teacher while you
choose to be.

And while you choose for me to be?

For me, there is no choice.

Yes.

Degeneration as a Universal Law

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom:

I Ching 17 – Following.
Lake is above Thunder.

Following follows Delight (16)
and leads to Degeneration (18).

The way of delight leading
to disaster?

Not necessarily so.

Please explain.

Delight in itself is neutral
as far as ethical outcome
is concerned.

Then it’s a matter of what
delights us?

Yes.

So, in the case of …

Yes?

I’m trying to express taking pleasure
or being pleased with activities
that bring pleasure to others
as well as to myself.

Go on.

In such a situation, how could
mutual pleasure lead to
degeneration?

Degeneration is a necessary part
of any outcome.

How?

It’s a Universal Law.

Then please explain how
this law works.

Everything changes.

When?

Continuously.

But, if shared pleasure is
an outcome then how can this
be considered as degenerating
anything or anybody?

When shared pleasure is increased
then displeasure or unhappiness
is decreased, or degenerated

The message?

That is the message.

The Unknown; within and beyond

Spirit shares I Ching wisdom.

16 – Pleasure – Thunder over Earth

Pleasure develops out of Humility and becomes Following.

Humility does not require low self-esteem. We can recognize
and take pleasure in knowing how far we have come on our
journey through Life, and yet, still be in awe of how far
we still must travel to satisfy our Soul.

Where does pleasure come into that awareness?

Pleasure is a necessary food for the Soul. Without pleasure
there can be no incentive to move forward.

Why?

Pleasure provides meaning to Life.

How?

We must enjoy what we are doing or where our efforts
may lead us, or why do anything or move toward anything?

Fear of losing something?

What?

I don’t know.

Yes.

What does that mean?

The unknown will always be within us and beyond us.

How can it be within and beyond? Oh, no. Don’t tell me.

Yes. It is another Universal Law.

Attraction pulls as a pendulum

Spirit shares His understanding of I Ching wisdom expressed by Hexagram 42 – Increase. Wind is over Thunder; yang overĀ  yin. Every line has its ideal complement.

“Increase develops out of Reduction (41). and moves toward Removal (43) The pendulum reaches its extreme in either direction of expansion and then turns, as a railway or bus line between two limits of its route. Whenever we reduce our position relative to whatever, or whomever, we, at the same time, increase it to another. The Law of Attraction works according to this principle.”

“How did the Law of Attraction …?”

“How does the Law of Attraction enter into the concept of increase?”

“Yes.”

“Whatever we attract moves our relationship from the opposite position.”

“What if we attract each other?”

“Then we have moved away from a position of being less attracted to each other.”

“Is there a personal message, or question?”

“Yes.”

…………….

I Ching 51 – Thunder

Spirit shares his understanding of I Ching 51 – Thunder

Thunder above, Thunder below.

Thunder follows Cauldron in the order of the Hexagrams.

The order of the Hexagrams expresses the Universal Law of Causality. Nothing comes from nothing. All situations develop from a previous situation. How they develop and what they develop into is not entirely predetermined. Free will and choice, as well as Destiny contribute to the outcome. How we choose can be the result of habit, or awareness and intent to develop our own way through life situations not necessarily of our own choosing.

The message?

Thunder is never silent.

I’m allowed to complain?

It seems to be in your nature to do so.

I Ching 33 – Withdrawal

Today’s I Ching – 33 – Withdrawal

Heaven above, Mountain below. Withdrawal follows Constancy in the order of the Hexagrams.

Spirit explains: Constancy suggests enduring, but, nothing lasts forever, at least not in this physical and material world. The Universal Law of Interdependence refers to relationships, such as: give and take, come and go.

Does that mean you are leaving me?

Yes, It does not mean that.

Then what?

Wait and see.
